Maude is for sale.
1972 Trails West Campster
13’, single axel, dry weight about 1,200 lbs
She is a fully restored, from top to bottom - inside and out, vintage camper.
It’s a little bittersweet to part with ‘Maude’ because she’s amazing. We named her Maude because we got her the same time we got our Subaru and named them ‘Harold & Maude’.
A few years later, we came upon a Scamp somewhat unexpectedly and bought that (about 10 years before we’d planned to make a change). So I finished the restoration and now we’re parting with Maude.
The restoration:
- Tires: New-ish
- Wheels: sanded and powder coated
- Frame: reinforced gussets and powder coated
- New Axel-less Suspension: Timbren 2k
- Locking tongue box holds the 10-gallon propane bottle, wheel chocks, tools, extension cord, RV water hose & water filter (never used - we always camp off-grid)
- New-ish upholstery (I had it professionally redone when we got her about 3 years ago)
- New 16 gallon water tank (upgraded from the original 12-gal) and 12-volt water pump
- 300 watts of solar on top, with Renogy controller, two-12Ah Gel batteries, and a 1000 watt inverter.
- Or you can run it all off of shore power
- All LED lights; I added a dimmer to the main light
- Cabinetry: All new 1” plywood. (On our last road trip, waaaay off-grid, the 50-year old cabinetry fell apart… I wanted to make something that would last another 50 years!)
- New table
- New curtains & curtain rods
- New pop-up skirt (has a couple of tiny holes from my family not closing it correctly) with struts
- Fridge: I have the original ice box if you want it (in storage), but we’re vegan and don’t need to freeze things, so I put in the Coleman Thermoelectric cooler. Unless you’re camping in the heat, it stays around 30-40 degrees (40 degrees below the ambient temperature. But I added a 12 volt outlet next to it, you you could easily switch it to one that has a freezer
Includes everything you need to go camping today: camping pots & pans, vintage Tupperware dishes, silverware, camping-port-a-potty and privacy tent, towels, rags, and some bins that we used for storage (which are included but I know people like to make things their own).
I like vintage, so I did not repaint it. I love the look. The only thing is that I did a bit of fiberglass repair on the back. There were several holes on the back and a small crack near the door; seems like POs had moved either lights or license plate more than once. So I did repaint the back as close as I could to match the existing paint. It’s not perfect but unless you’re looking right at the corner, most people won’t notice.
The other thing is the door was left open one day when I had the cabinetry apart (before I installed it), so of course, it rained. So there is a little discoloration on some of the cabinetry. My wife doesn’t think it’s noticeable but I can see it. I’d probably be asking for more but I know she’s not “perfect” by new standards but she was perfect for us.
Includes two white vintage lawn chairs (you can kind of see them in the first photo), table, grass mat, and awning seen in the night-time photo (which attaches to the roof - extremely secure in wind!)
She’s light enough to be towed by our VW bus, so that’s saying something! ;)
Clear title in hand.
