Right up front-due to the number of inquiries about trailer weight. It weighed exactly 2014 lbs with an even split of 890/892 on each tire and 232lbs on the tongue. The trailer is dry but has 15-25 lbs worth of miscellaneous camping supplies inside. Hope that helps any interested buyers.
This is an 84 Scamp 16foot Layout 4. I scooped this up a few months ago as a project. At first it didn t seem like it needed much but all campers need a lot of love if they re not seeing regular use and maintenance as this one was. After a few weeks of dedicated effort we have taken it camping here in Wisconsin on a few short trips from home. It looks good and collected a lot of compliments. All the original Scamp fitted equipment works.
I took my time replacing all the fasteners for the body using 3/16 alloy rivets with Scamp snap caps and stainless 1/4 acorn nuts visible inside. I then removed the front window and put on a new seal, installed new outer window seals on all windows, removed the back window to straighten old damage to the window frame as the prior owner backed it into something which caused flexing the window frame and breaking the glass so I had new custom cut tempered glass made which I put in. I installed a new proper roof vent lid, brand new Carlisle 13 tires and matching spare. I sandblasted and painted the original steel wheels and found chrome baby moon hubcaps for it. I fixed bad damaged wiring at the tongue, installed all new LED side running lights and located NOS original lenses for the now working rear original 110-150 lights. I installed a front, fixed the kinked/cracked gas line, got the after chasing some electrical issues (I don’t run it on 12v or propane-just shore power) and got everything just right. The fridge works great at the halfway setting and will freeze your food solid at the highest setting. Again- I did not bother running it on 12v or propane . I installed a new interior outlet on the interior cooktop side by the dinette with USB chargers built in. All the interior lights work on shore or battery power.
The original AC works just fine in fan or cooling settings. This Scamp was never equipped with a /furnace which is unusual from my experience. A small infrared electric heater will cook you out of a 16’ model as we have experienced that! It also has an electric water heater which I ve not spent any time playing with, but I’m getting hot water from the new faucet so it may be a cool piece of working old equipment.
The fresh water tank has been removed and cleaned with a new strainer installed and the 12v water pump works as it should and holds pressure in the system on 12v or shore power.
There is a gray water tank, no black water tank. The original toilet works good and has its own sewer valve if you intend to use it.
The original carpeting and awesome upholstery are actually in really good shape with no funky smells.
I used a high heat paint on the original cooktop as the old chrome/nickel surface was in poor condition. It held up well to a weekend of cooking breakfasts and dinners and all burners work great.
I built a new table out of edge glued pine as the old one had some water issues and was ugly. The new one is far lighter than the old one and supported two adults and two kids while laying on it.
The only issues this Scamp has at 38 years old are the following:
Typical flatness of white gelcoat. There are some scratches, spiderweb cracking in the gelcoat in some spots and some rock chips. The Scamp decals have some marks and age is visible. New green pine tree decals were added too where the old ones were delapodated. There’s remnants of an old Good Sam member sticker on the upper left rear corner of the shell seen in photos.. There are a few soft spots on the rear floor of the trailer from old water leakage at the water connection, none of which has led to the shell sagging. I ve replaced floors in two previous Scamps- both were far worse than what I am describing here.
The seam tape on the elephant skin-ensolite has been replaced with a Scotch brand “indoor” 15lb holding strength 1” foam tape that really made the interior look better.
The axle has been previously replaced although I can not say exactly how old it is. It does have brakes but they’re not currently tested as my tow vehicle is more than adequate in its towing capacity.
There’s two new sewer tube holders up front as well-but no hoses inside.
Overall this is a really good trailer as it is to go camping right now or add your own custom touches to.
